A positive net means the person gets money back; a negative net means they owe. The nets always add up to exactly 0.
Amounts that do not divide evenly are rounded with the largest-remainder method, one smallest unit at a time (ties go to the person listed first).

FAQ
How are amounts that do not divide evenly handled?
With the largest-remainder method: the leftover smallest units (1 yen, 1 cent) go one at a time to the people with the largest remainders, and ties go to the person listed first. Each expense’s parts always add up to the expense, and all balances always sum to exactly 0.
Is the number of payments the smallest possible?
The person who owes the most pays the person who is owed the most, repeatedly, so there are never more than (number of people − 1) payments. This is not guaranteed to be the mathematical minimum in every case.
Can children pay half, or can I split by exact amounts?
Yes. Choose "By shares (weights)" and enter, for example, 2 for adults and 1 for children. Entering each person’s exact amount as their share splits the expense by those amounts.
