FAQ

Which romanization is used?

The main table of the Japanese Cabinet Notice “Rōmaji no tsuzurikata” (No. 4, December 2025): shi, chi, tsu, fu, ji and so on. The quiz also accepts the other spellings listed in the notice’s comparison table, such as si, ti, tu, hu, zi, wo, di and du.

Why are を, ぢ and づ written o, ji and zu?

The notice treats お/を, じ/ぢ and ず/づ as the same sound in modern standard Japanese and spells them the same way. They are left out of the romaji → kana quiz because the question would have two right answers.

Where does the pronunciation come from?

From the Japanese speech synthesis voice of your device’s operating system. No recordings are used, and the listen buttons are hidden when the device has no Japanese voice.

Notes & limitations

  • What you enter is processed only on this page and is not sent to YUCTS servers.
  • It practises one kana at a time. For writing whole words (long vowels such as ō/ou, double consonants for っ, ん before vowels), see the notes in the notice.
  • Passports, station names and other fields may use their own spellings that differ from the notice.
  • Sounds used only in loanwords (such as ファ or ヴ) and the obsolete ゐ and ゑ are outside the notice and not included.
  • Pronunciation uses the operating system’s speech synthesis, so voices and quality vary by device; it is not a perfect pronunciation model.
  • Quiz results are not saved and disappear when you close the page.
