Import from CSV

Import a CSV file with one card per line: front, back and an optional category. Tables made in Excel or Google Sheets work too.

CSV or TSV file (UTF-8 or Windows-1252, up to 2 MB).

Export and backup

You can edit the CSV file in a spreadsheet app and import it here again (cells starting with =, +, - or @ get a leading apostrophe so they are not run as formulas; importing here removes it). The JSON backup restores everything, including categories.

Manage your data

Your entries are saved in this browser on this device.

How to use

  1. Type the front (question) and the back (answer), choose a category if you like, and press "Add card".
  2. Add, rename or delete categories under "Manage categories". Search your cards or filter them by category.
  3. Import many cards at once from a CSV file: choose the front, back and category columns. Lines with problems are listed with their line numbers.
  4. Export your cards as CSV or as a JSON backup. Cards are saved on this device and can be used right away in the flashcard quiz.

FAQ

Where are my cards stored?

Only in this browser on this device (IndexedDB); nothing is sent to a server. To use them on another device, export a JSON backup or a CSV file and import it there.

Can I import a CSV file made in Excel or Google Sheets?

Yes. UTF-8 files work, and so do Windows-1252 files saved by older versions of Excel. Comma- and tab-separated files are supported, and you choose which column is the front, the back and the category.

What happens to lines that cannot be imported?

Lines with an empty front or back, or with text that is too long, are listed with their line number and reason and are not imported. Lines with the same front and back as an existing card are skipped as duplicates.

Why do some cells in the exported CSV start with an apostrophe?

Cells starting with =, +, - or @ could be run as formulas by spreadsheet apps (CSV injection), so an apostrophe is added in front. Importing the file into this tool removes it again.

Notes & limitations

  • What you enter is processed only on this page and is not sent to YUCTS servers.
  • Up to 2,000 cards and 50 categories. The front can have up to 300 characters and the back up to 1,000. Images and audio are not supported.
  • Your data is stored only in this browser. Clearing browser data or using private mode deletes it, so save a backup of cards that matter to you.
  • CSV files must be UTF-8 or Windows-1252. Files in other encodings may show garbled text.
