How things are counted

  • Characters: each user-perceived character (extended grapheme cluster, Unicode UAX #29) counts as one. 👨‍👩‍👧, 🇯🇵, 👍🏽 and a CR+LF line break are one character each. Uses the browser's Intl.Segmenter.
  • Code points: the number of Unicode code points (👨‍👩‍👧 has 5). UTF-16: the unit used by JavaScript's length (👨‍👩‍👧 is 8). UTF-8: the size in bytes when saved as UTF-8.
  • Chinese/Japanese characters: kanji/hanzi (including 々 and 〆), hiragana and katakana (including half-width katakana and the long-vowel mark ー). Punctuation, brackets and symbols are not included.
  • Words: a run of letters and digits other than kanji and kana is one word. ' ’ - . _ inside a word and , between digits join the parts (don't, well-known, 3.14 and 1,000 are one word each).
  • Spaces: half-width and full-width spaces, tabs, no-break spaces and similar. Line breaks are not included.
  • Line breaks: CR+LF, LF, CR and similar each count as one. Lines = line breaks + 1. Paragraphs are blocks separated by blank lines (lines with only spaces count as blank).

FAQ

How are emoji counted?

Each user-perceived character (grapheme cluster) counts as one, so 👨‍👩‍👧 (family), 🇯🇵 (flag) and emoji with skin tones are one character each. Code points and UTF-16 length are shown under "Breakdown and Unicode units".

Do line breaks count as characters?

"Characters" includes line breaks. Counts without line breaks and without spaces or line breaks are shown too. A Windows line break (CR+LF) counts as one.

How are words counted?

A run of letters and digits (other than Chinese characters and kana) is one word. Apostrophes, hyphens and periods inside a word join it, so don't, well-known and 3.14 are one word each.

Is my text uploaded?

No. All counting happens in your browser and nothing is sent to a server.

Notes & limitations

  • What you enter is processed only on this page and is not sent to YUCTS servers.
  • Character limits are counted differently by different services (forms, social networks, publishers). Check the rules of the place you submit to.
  • Words are counted by spaces and punctuation, so languages written without spaces between words (such as Thai) are not counted correctly.
  • Older browsers without Intl.Segmenter use simplified rules for characters, so some characters may be counted differently.
  • Up to 300,000 characters (UTF-16 code units) can be counted.
