Hashtag Cleaner

Add or remove #, remove duplicate hashtags (optionally ignoring case and full-width forms), sort them and count them. Works with hashtags in any language and with emoji; spaces and symbols are handled for you.

  • Runs in your browser (no upload)

Tags are separated by spaces, commas, line breaks and #. You can paste a whole post.

How to read the input
Each line or comma-separated item becomes one tag; spaces inside are handled like other characters that cannot be used.

Tags keep letters and digits of any language, underscores (_) and emoji.

Duplicates and characters
Compared after Unicode normalization (NFKC), so full-width letters match normal ones. The first spelling found is kept.

Changes and notes

  • Tags whose unusable characters were handled:
    • new-york → #newyork
    • Travel! → #Travel
  • Some networks do not treat tags made only of digits as hashtags: #2024

Which characters work in hashtags

  • The help centers of X, Instagram and Facebook say that hashtags with spaces, punctuation or special characters (such as $ or %) do not work properly. This tool removes those characters, replaces them with _ or splits the tag there.
  • Letters and digits of every language, underscores (_) and emoji are kept. Some networks do not support emoji in hashtags; choose “Remove emoji” if needed.
  • Tags that differ only in upper/lower case or full-width/half-width characters are usually treated as the same tag, so they are merged as duplicates (you can change this).
  • Limits on the number of tags and the exact character rules differ between networks and can change (for example, Instagram’s help allows up to 5 tags per post and X’s help recommends no more than 2). Check each service’s help before posting.

How to use

  1. Paste your hashtags or a whole post.
  2. Choose how to read the input, how to handle symbols and duplicates, the order, and whether to output # and which separator.
  3. Check the cleaned list and the counts, then copy it.

FAQ

Can I use hashtags in other languages or with emoji?

Yes. Letters and digits of every language, underscores and emoji are kept. Some networks do not support emoji in hashtags; choose “Remove emoji” in that case.

What happens to a tag like #new-york?

Most networks cut a hashtag at a symbol, so you can remove the symbol (#newyork), replace it with _ (#new_york) or split the tag there (#new #york).
